Insulated Bottles vs Bladders for Cold Weather
Winter hydration is a battle against freezing. The question is whether to carry an insulated bottle or a bladder, and the answer changes with the temperature.
Match the container to the cold.
- Insulated bottles resist freezing for hours
- Bladder tubes freeze first, even with insulation
- Bottles are easier to thaw than a frozen hose
- Bladders carry more water but at a freezing risk
Below freezing, bottles win. Keep them upside down so the cap freezes last, and you will always have water when the day gets hard.
Fill bottles only three quarters full in deep cold so the ice has room to expand. A cracked bottle is a cold, thirsty walk back to the car.
