Layering for a 40 Degree Morning Start
Starting a hike at 40 degrees with a full pack is a layering puzzle. You are cold for ten minutes, then sweating, then freezing every time the wind picks up, all before lunch.
Stack the layers in the right order.
- A thin merino base wicks sweat and dries fast
- A light fleece traps heat without cooking you on climbs
- A wind shell breaks the breeze that steals your warmth
- Keep an insulated layer packed for stops and summits
Start a little cold and let the walking warm you. If you are comfortable in the first ten minutes, you are wearing too much for the climb ahead.
Keep the wind shell in an outside pocket where you can grab it without stopping. The best layer is the one you actually put on before you get chilled.
