Resoling vs Replacing: When Boots Get a Second Life

James HerrinJames Herrin·1 min read·

Good boots are expensive, and when the sole wears thin you face a choice: resole or replace. For a quality leather boot, resoling is often the smarter money.

Decide by the boot, not the price.

  • Full-grain leather boots resole beautifully and last decades
  • Cheap glued boots are not worth the resole cost
  • A cobbler can fix a sole but not a cracked upper
  • Resoling costs about half a new pair, sometimes less

If the upper is still sound, give the boot a second life. A good cobbler is the most underrated gear purchase in the outdoors.

Find a cobbler before the sole wears to the midsole. A boot caught early resoles cleanly, while one worn to the foam is already beyond saving.
