Crossing a River Safely With a Full Pack

James HerrinJames Herrin·1 min read·

River crossings claim more hikers than most people realize. Fast water is deceptive, and a full pack turns a simple ford into a serious risk if you rush it.

Treat every crossing with respect.

  • Unbuckle your hip and sternum straps before stepping in
  • Face upstream and shuffle sideways for stability
  • Use a pole or stick as a third point of contact
  • Cross one at a time and wait for the safest line

If the water is fast enough to knock you over, it is fast enough to carry you away. Turn around or find a better spot upstream.

If the water is murky enough to hide the bottom, probe with a pole before you step. A hidden drop can be deeper and faster than it looks from the bank.
