Trail Etiquette That Keeps Everyone Happy

James HerrinJames Herrin·1 min read·

The trail is shared ground, and a few unwritten rules keep it pleasant for everyone. A little courtesy costs nothing and makes the difference between a good day and a tense one.

Remember the basics people forget.

  • Uphill hikers have the right of way, step aside downhill
  • Keep music to yourself or use earbuds
  • Yield to horses and step to the downhill side
  • Pack out everything, even the tiny wrappers

Good trail manners spread fast. Be the hiker others are glad to meet, and the trail stays friendly for the next person too.

A friendly hello and a step aside costs you two seconds. The trail runs smoother when everyone remembers it is shared, and kindness travels faster than any hiker.
