Boot Waterproofing Wax vs Spray: Which Lasts

James HerrinJames Herrin·1 min read·

Every leather boot needs treatment, and the eternal question is wax or spray. Both work, but they behave differently in the wet and over time.

Match the treatment to the leather.

  • Wax soaks deep and lasts longer through creek crossings
  • Spray is quick and even but wears off sooner
  • Wax can darken and soften the leather’s look
  • Spray preserves breathability better on mixed materials

For full-grain leather in serious wet, wax is the winner. For light boots and mixed uppers, a monthly spray keeps you dry without the mess.

Reapply the treatment before a long wet trip, not during it. A freshly treated boot shrugs off creeks, while a neglected one soaks through by lunch.
