Packing a Bear Canister Without the Bulk

James HerrinJames Herrin·1 min read·

A bear canister is non-negotiable in many parks, and also the most annoying thing in your pack. It is a rigid cylinder that refuses to stack, but a little packing sense tames it.

Work around the can.

  • Pack soft items around the canister to fill dead space
  • Put dense food inside, light bulky gear around it
  • Strap it on top if your pack has a lid pocket
  • Practice loading before the trip, not at the trailhead

The canister is not going away, so make peace with it. A snug, centered canister rides better than one bouncing against your spine.

Practice packing the canister the night before, not at the trailhead. A loaded canister that fits flush against your back rides like it is not even there.
